Code.org

Code.org® is our latest Impact Partner - we made a $100,000 AUD donation to kickstart our partnership back in March 2022. As a non-profit dedicated to providing access to computer science education for all students, they are doing an incredible job at getting more young people interested in coding, especially women and underrepresented students of colour.

Among other things, Code.org has been carrying out its multi-year plan to support Black employees, students and teachers (BEST plan). In the last six months, they have achieved:

  • More transparent and robust data about intersectionality and participation of Black students in the broader computer science community.
  • Launched their new AP® CSA course with the goal of dramatically increasing the participation of underrepresented groups and young women in this advanced programming course. There are 300+ teachers participating in their first professional learning for AP® CSA right now!

Room to Read

Room to Read believes that world change starts with educated children, and has transformed the lives of 32 million children and their communities by delivering literacy and girls’ education programs in low-income countries.

A big challenge they faced during the pandemic was ensuring continued education amidst lockdowns and school closures. Over the last two years, Room to Read ensured that children could access their right to learn by:

  • Equipping households with home library packages, storybooks, instructional guides and educational worksheets;
  • Delivering virtual teacher trainings; and
  • Conducting group mentoring sessions to ensure that girls continue to develop life skills and build community.

Yalari

To create a brighter future for Indigenous Australians, Yalari offers quality secondary education scholarships at leading boarding schools for Indigenous children.

In the past year there were 227 students who joined the Yalari Scholarship program from all across Australia - from 131 regional, rural and remote communities including Pormpuraaw, Daly River, Moree and Badu Island. The scholarship opportunities, together with Yalari’s holistic support program, create a foundation of success for our students who are ready, willing and able to serve as future leaders.

From Year 7, Yalari ensures that its scholars are equipped with the tools they need for success at boarding school. When exiting the program at Year 12, Yalari also ensures that its students have the tools and support they need to be successful in life beyond boarding school. In addition to the pastoral care provided through Yalari’s Student Support Officers and Student Development Program, their Pathways Program provides guidance and support to current Yalari scholars and alumni in pursuing post-school options. The program includes one-on-one support as well as group development opportunities. As of 2022, there are over 440 Yalari alumni!

Manaiakalani

Manaiakalani works in partnership with Māori, Pasifika and low income communities to address educational inequity in primary schools. It inspires New Zealand’s disadvantaged learners to better educational outcomes through:

  • Supporting school leaders and teachers in delivering innovative, learner-centric teaching methods; and
  • Supporting parents to invest in a digital learning device for their child and provide wireless internet access at home and school.

Manaiakalani’s pedagogy of ‘Learn, Create, Share’ puts its young students at the very centre of their learning. Here is a video which explains this in song, created by Casey, Tanielu, Moses, and other Year 8 learners at Pt England School who wrote the song as part of an Inquiry into Space.

Manaiakalani has grown from a coalition of 7 schools (2012) to over 120 schools in 15 communities across NZ (2022), all engaged collaboratively to increase student outcomes through applied evidence-based improvement in teacher practice. Some cool stats:

  • Over 30,000 students are now learning in Manaiakalani schools.
  • Research and evaluation demonstrates that Manaiakalani learners can achieve at over 1.5 times the expected rate, particularly in writing.
  • Manaiakalani’s microfinancing approach has made learning devices accessible and affordable for thousands of students from poor homes.
  • The Summer Learning Journey, a curated online learning programme, kept hundreds of children engaged in learning over the long summer break.
  • Despite lockdowns, Manaiakalani students and teachers were confident and well-equipped, moving seamlessly from physical to online learning from home.
